Sorghum boost from EASY Liquids

Rob said the sorghum crop showed little sign of nutritional distress, despite torrential rain in the Emerald area during January and February, 2008.

Despite heavy rainfalls after planting, Rob Ingram received good yields from his sorghum crop planted in the first week of January 2008.

Rob was in the same situation as many growers in the Emerald region who received heavy rainfall after the dry conditions in the past couple of years.

The farm recorded almost 450 mm of rainfall from mid-January to mid-February.

While the torrential rain was mostly good news for the district, Rob said he was concerned about the sorghum crop he and his father, Bob, had planted on their 400 hectare farm west of Emerald.

He planted the sorghum using the liquid starter fertiliser EASY NP+Zn™ from the EASY Liquids® range, giving it a good start with nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and zinc.

Rob said EASY NP+Zn provided the crop with a good source of nutrients which made it easier for the crop to emerge.

He applied 15 L/ha of EASY NP+Zn to his 160 hectare sorghum crop and 30 L/ha to an 80 hectare cotton crop by water injecting into the soil at planting.

“It was easy to apply and was a good pop-up fertiliser that helped the crops get away before the heavy rains.”

Another big advantage, according to Rob, was that the crop showed no signs of nutritional stress after the heavy rain.

“The crop didn’t yellow off as badly after the rain when a lot of other crops showed more stress,” he said.

The 6 t/ha sorghum crop was harvested in late April 2008.

This winter, he will be planting chickpeas and then predominantly cotton for the coming summer crop season, now that the Fairbairn Dam is full.

“Because of the levels at Fairbairn, we have enough water to plant irrigated cotton until 2011,” Rob said.

“From what we have seen with EASY Liquids, we will definitely be using it in the future.”

Well suited for water injecting, surface sprays, fertigation or sidedressing applications, the EASY Liquids starter range allows growers to place starter nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and zinc, with the seed at planting.

The EASY Liquids starter range comprises EASY NP™, EASY NP+Zn™ and EASY NPK 27™.

If trace elements are not applied at planting, an alternative option is to apply foliar applications soon after emergence using products such as Zincsol®, Mangasol® and Coppersol®.
