Applying EASY N and gibberellic acid
EASY N fertiliser and gibberellic acid are a compatible combination to increase pasture dry matter production over late autumn, winter and early spring periods.
EASY N is a liquid nitrogen source that contains nitrate nitrogen, which is immediately available for the pastures to respond to, while gibberellic acid is a plant growth regulator that stimulates growth through cell expansion resulting in stem and leaf elongation.
By applying EASY N and gibberellic acid together, pasture managers can benefit from two forms of growth assistance to pastures in combination with the added benefit of a one pass application.
Tank mixing
EASY N can be applied neat or with water if desired spray volumes need to be increased. Gibberellic acid is best dissolved in a clean bucket with water and then added to the tank, particularly if tank agitation is poor.
If additional chemicals or insecticides are to be added, then they should be added to a minimum of 20% water, in correct order, followed by EASY N and gibberellic acid.
Mixing order
- At least 20% water if additional chemicals are added (add chemicals/insecticides in correct order as per manufacturers’ instructions).
- Add EASY N
- Add gibberellic acid solution.
Note:
A bucket test must be carried out prior to tank mixing to ensure that all intended ingredients are compatible.
Rates
To achieve nitrogen responses on pasture, applications should be in the range of 25 – 50 kg/ha of nitrogen. This equates to EASY N rates of 60 -120 L/ha.
Gibberellic acid rates depend on pasture species but are generally in the range of 10 – 20 g/ha.
Application
Pasture dry matter responses will be better where soil fertiliser and moisture are good, plant density is high, weed numbers are low and insects and diseases are controlled.
EASY N and gibberellic acid should be applied with herbicide nozzles or where pasture is greater than 1 leaf stage to optimise leaf contact.
Where ambient temperature is more than 18°C, EASY N should be applied separately using streaming nozzles.
Timing
The product tank mix should be applied within six hours of mixing. EASY N and gibberellic acid should be applied post grazing to a minimum residual dry matter of 1,000 – 1,200 kg/DM/ha.
Herbicide nozzle applications of EASY N should not be applied more than seven days (1 leaf stage) post-grazing to minimise risk of burn to emerging leaf.
Hygiene
EASY N is corrosive. Boomspray components should be either stainless steel or plastic poly pipe. After application, boomsprays should be flushed with water. Tractor and boomspray should also be washed down with water.
